Why Studying the Bible Hands-On Is Exactly What You Need

Do you remember the first time you flew on an airplane? Think back to how you felt as you looked out the window during take-off and saw the land beneath you getting smaller and smaller, and the world getting bigger and bigger.

What if you could experience that same sense of excitement every time you read Scripture? When it comes to studying the Bible, nothing is more thrilling than discovering truth in God’s Word and connecting it to your actual life!

Here at Yarrow, we believe in a hands-on approach to Bible study. We help you discover what the Bible says, what it means, and how its meaning applies to your life using our Method. This method, which consists of three components—Observe, Interpret, and Apply—is how you can open your Bible, know what it says, and be sure that you know what it means.

Psalm 48:14 (ESV) says, “This is God, our God forever and ever. He will guide us forever.” As we read and understand Scripture—and how it relates to real life—God guides us into His Truth, and we grow closer and closer to Him.

We’ve got lots of reasons why we think studying the Bible using our Method is the most helpful, but here are just two:

1. Discover truth on your own.

We’ve all heard the phrase, “Just take my word for it.” But when it comes to knowing what the Bible says about big questions—about race, sexuality, or mental health, for example—we can’t just take other people’s word for it. We have to study what Scripture says ourselves!

When you study with Yarrow, we aren’t going to tell you what to believe. Instead, we’ll guide you to let the Bible speak for itself. If a passage is confusing, we’ll help you turn to other passages of Scripture to get more insight. Studying God’s Word is a lifelong journey, and the more you explore the Bible and grow closer to God, the more your understanding will grow.

At the end of the day, as you use the Yarrow approach to studying Scripture, you’ll be more confident than ever that you know what the Bible says—and when you don’t know, you’ll know how to find out!

2. Grow closer to God.

Here’s the biggest reason why we think studying the Bible this way is so important: the God of the universe is speaking to each of us through His Word!

If a loved one on Earth sent you a letter expressing their love for you, you wouldn’t ask someone else to read it and then tell you what it says and what that means for your relationship, would you? Probably not! You’d read it slowly and carefully, taking every word to heart.

That’s what studying the Bible with Yarrow is like: We guide you as you read God’s Word and take it to heart, making connections between Scripture and your life.

It’s true that God gave us the Bible to teach us, reprove us, correct us, and train us in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16). But ultimately, God gave us His Word so we can know Him. And as we grow closer to Him, we’ll live out His truth more and more—and make our mark on this world for His glory!

Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”
